The Watsons Go To Birmingham 1963 :

Staged Concert Adaptation of Family Civil Rights Dramedy

March 15th – March 24th

@ The Kennedy Center, Eisenhower Theater, Washington, DC

The Watsons are a loving, middle-class black family living in Flint Michigan during some of the most turbulent years of the Civil Rights Movement. When their oldest son Byron keeps getting in trouble, the family piles into their car to spend the summer with Grandma Sands in Alabama, who they hope will straighten the boy out and be a good role model for their young daughter Joetta and ten-year-old son, Kenny. But their heartwarming and humorous adventure in the Deep South takes a somber turn when they witness one of the era’s most tragic acts of racial violence. This staged concert adaptation of Christopher Paul Curtis’s Newbery Medal-winning book The Watsons Go to Birmingham, 1963 comes to life with live music, humor and heart at the Eisenhower Theater at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Native Son

March 27–April 28, 2019

@ Atlas Performing Arts Center, Lang Theatre

By Nambi E. Kelley | Directed by Psalmayene 24

Featuring Clayton Pelham Jr. (as Bigger Thomas) with Lolita Marie, Melissa Flaim,

Drew Kopas, Vaughn Midder, Tendo Nsubuga, Madeline Joey Rose, Stephen Schmidt,

and Renee Elizabeth Wilson

Richard Wright’s iconic novel about oppression, freedom, and justice comes to life on stage in this ground-breaking adaptation. Suffocating in rat-infested poverty on the South Side of Chicago in the 1930s, 20-year-old Bigger Thomas struggles to find a place for himself in a world whose prejudice has shut him out. After taking a job in a wealthy white man’s house, Bigger unwittingly unleashes a series of events that violently and irrevocably seal his fate. Adapted with theatrical ingenuity by Chicago’s own Nambi E. Kelley, this Native Son captures the power of Richard Wright’s novel for a whole new generation. Director Psalmayene 24 will also be creating a companion piece to Native Son for the 2018-2019 workshop series.

“A bold new tone…distills Wright’s novel into 90 intermission-less minutes that are all action. It appreciates Wright’s book for its intensity, refusing to slow down.” — Hartford Courant

Directed by  Derrick Sanders

A co-production with Baltimore Center Stage,
