Gordon Parks: The New Tide, 1940-1950

@ National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC
Thru February 18, 2019

During the 1940’s American photographer Gordon Parks (1912-2006) grew from a self-taught photographer making portraits and documenting everyday life in Saint Paul and Chicago to a visionary professional shooting for EbonyVogueFortune, and Life. For the first time, the formative decades of Parks’s 60-year career are the focus of an exhibition, which brings together 120 photographs and ephemera—including magazines, books, letters, and family pictures. The exhibition will illustrate how Parks’s early experiences at the Farm Security Administration, Office of War Information, and Standard Oil (New Jersey) as well as his close relationships with Roy Stryker, Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, and Ralph Ellison, helped shape his groundbreaking style.

Native Son

March 27–April 28, 2019

@ Atlas Performing Arts Center, Lang Theatre

By Nambi E. Kelley | Directed by Psalmayene 24

Featuring Clayton Pelham Jr. (as Bigger Thomas) with Lolita Marie, Melissa Flaim,

Drew Kopas, Vaughn Midder, Tendo Nsubuga, Madeline Joey Rose, Stephen Schmidt,

and Renee Elizabeth Wilson

Richard Wright’s iconic novel about oppression, freedom, and justice comes to life on stage in this ground-breaking adaptation. Suffocating in rat-infested poverty on the South Side of Chicago in the 1930s, 20-year-old Bigger Thomas struggles to find a place for himself in a world whose prejudice has shut him out. After taking a job in a wealthy white man’s house, Bigger unwittingly unleashes a series of events that violently and irrevocably seal his fate. Adapted with theatrical ingenuity by Chicago’s own Nambi E. Kelley, this Native Son captures the power of Richard Wright’s novel for a whole new generation. Director Psalmayene 24 will also be creating a companion piece to Native Son for the 2018-2019 workshop series.

“A bold new tone…distills Wright’s novel into 90 intermission-less minutes that are all action. It appreciates Wright’s book for its intensity, refusing to slow down.” — Hartford Courant

Twisted Melodies

June 19–July 21, 2019

@  Atlas Performing Arts Center, Lang Theatre

Written and Performed by Kelvin Roston, Jr.

Directed by  Derrick Sanders

A co-production with Baltimore Center Stage,
Congo Square Theatre Company, and the Apollo Theater

This powerful one-man show, based on the life of ’70s soul singer and composer Donny Hathaway, imagines the troubled and brilliant musician’s last day on Earth in an immersive and crushing play about Hathaway’s compelling inner struggle. Torn between the muses that inspire him and the mental illness that torments him, Hathaway evaluates the choices in his life in a gripping performance by Kelvin Roston, Jr.

“Roston is totally convincing as Hathaway” —Chicago Tribune
